Today we tried to connect with Verna Roberts but there were issues with her wifi. We spent the first half of the class in the video conference room. Half our class was in a separate room with video technology connecting them. Video conferencing is a great tool that can be used for student accessibility. Technology such as this helps enrolment and could be used more in schools. Face to Face video interactions are important as it allows fast and easy communication. Using video chats allow students and teachers to express themselves easier by using facial expressions and tones. Face to face can allow students to collaborate and actively focus. It is important for students to learn to socialize however this can be done in unconventional ways using technology.

Should a teachers teaching methods override a students need for technology use? The answer is obviously no. However, technology is one of the grey areas where some teachers may not be wiling to or may not understand how to video chat someone. Teachers may also see a students absence as the student not wanting to learn. This is not the case some students struggle with anxiety, long commutes, or sickness’. Technology can be used in these cases to provide students with the possibility to video chat into class. We were also asked the question: does modality biased exit? The answer is yes, there is a biased for face to face interaction. It is important for students to attend school and participate in their school community but sometimes this isn’t a possibility.

Schools should be flexible and if a student is accountable and wiling to learn they should be able to participate using technology. This flexibility will influence student engagement. Having solely face to face schooling is limiting learners. For the most part our society has binary thinking when it comes to face to face vs online as if it needs to be one or the other. There is another idea that it could be blended but blended does not meet mobility needs. Schools should be multi-access. This provides students with various learning methods to choose from. It may be individual if you are video chatting alone or it may be a more interactive experience if you are on campus with many others.

The Second half of the class was spent listening to presentations by peers. There were presentations on google apps, technology for students with disabilities, mindfulness apps and technology for assisted learning. The most exciting part of the class was seeing a bot in action. We learned about the different kinds of robots such as the Bean. The bot was designed to allow students to video chat into lessons.

Today we had students from Colquitz Middle School teach our Tech class about Minecraft. We learned danTDM is a famous Minecraft youtuber our students most likely follow. Minecraft is used to hangout with school friends on servers or used to connect with people globally. Minecraft gets students in touch with their creative side. Most of Minecraft worlds serve as a blank slate students can build on. If I brought Minecraft into the classroom I would not just tell students the tools they need to build something but allow them to figure it out on their own. This will allow students to remember how to build in the future. As a teacher you could use Minecraft as a tool to monitor students communication which is one of the curricular competencies. Today was my first time using Minecraft and I was not a huge fan. Personally I wanted a more structured idea of how to build. I am not very good with the system so I would need to practice more before implementing it in the classroom. I would not use Minecraft all the time maybe only provide a basic lesson of how to use it and then allow students to choose if They wish to use it for projects. Using Minecraft is a great way to get in touch with what your learners are doing.

Today we learned about ED Camp conferences. Before ED Camp conferences teachers would sit and listen to key note speakers during conferences. Teachers decided it would be more beneficial to talk to each other about topics they choose and thats how Ed Camp was created. It is a conference open to everyone teachers, students, and parents. The conference starts with blank boards teachers fill with topics they wish to discuss. The teachers parents and students can choose which talks they wish to go to. Today in class we did a sample ED Camp conference I went to a talk on classroom management and conflict solving. Together our group came up with ideas such as exist slip, students assigned jobs to clean the class, routines, student driven rule posters, and non participation slips.

Today we had a discussion about our trip to PSII and our presentation by Jesse Miller. After we debriefed we had time to work on our free inquiry, Trello board and tech inquiry. We also paired up to receive feedback on our personal blog and how we can improve them. Overall it was a very useful block.

Today our class went to the Pacific School of Innovation and Inquiry (PSII) a private school created by Jeff Hopkins. PSII’s s serve as teachers, counsellors and principals helping run the school. The school has a 95 (student) to 7 (educator) ratio which allows the educators to develop a good relationship with their learners. Inquiry is essentially answering an open-ended question that can lead to more questions. It is a personalized learning plan students create on their own to explore a subject in depth. Using inquiry allows the students to learn what they are passionate about. Going to the High school was a super unique experience that I am extremely grateful for as it can change the way I teach my students. Generally speaking the current education system is very structured. Inquiry eliminates the structure and allows for exploration. One of my favourite parts about the high school was the sensory room which was filled with objects directed to calm students. Examples of the sensory toys are fidgets, sensory objects, and weighted blankets.

Inquiry is an amazing concept Trevor Mackenzie along with many others came up with. I was fortunate to have Mr. Mackenzie as a high school teacher where he introduced the idea of inquiry. At first I found the idea very scary as a person who likes structure. I always want to have a more well rounded knowledge base and found it difficult to wrap my head around. At PSII I found it hard to imagine doing a project on ouster space being equivalent of Chemistry 11 although the teacher might ask them to add a section on titration I still don’t see how they would learn everything they would need for university. It was also crazy the students didn’t have blocks or time for lunch they just ate when they wanted to and took breaks when they needed to.

A potential issue with inquiry is that a student may miss key learning points that lead to future understanding in a subject/field. Another possible problem is that elementary school learners may not know what they are passionate about yet or they do know and wont want to learn about other topics. Therefor I see this system potentially fostering ignorance on certain objects. Another potential issue with the program is that if a student doesn’t like a subject an example being math they may not do it or may not be able to do it without specific instruction. The last downside I see is if a student is not motivated to learn they may not be able to work independently without guidelines. One of the biggest challenges with inquiry in the elementary level is you could spend your whole year teaching inquiry to your grade 3 class but then next year their grade 4 teacher will teach without inquiry and students may lose the skill.

I love the anecdotal report card system they use at PSII. Anecdotal report cards describe your progression throughout the year. Students only get a grade at the end of the year. Another positive to this learning style is maximum student engagement as students are passionate about the questions they attempt to answer and use self regulation to do work. I believe this system is super beneficial to teach children critical thinking and creativity skills transferable to future careers. One of my issues going through school is I would always follow the teachers instruction and information without questioning it. It makes me wonder if I grew up with inquiry based learning would be a more independent thinker? I believe if I was teaching inquiry I would use a structured inquiry approach and perhaps tell them to do a project an animal. They can write whatever they want about that animal but give examples (examples are write about the animals habitat or alimentation). Starting with structured inquiry is important as students should be taught using scaffolding. Students will slowly be learning expectations and techniques to complete thier work before throwing them in the deep end of inquiry.

Today our guest speaker was Jesse Miller from Mediated Reality. Millers talk was very engaging and interesting I learned a lot. He focused on the new generation of education and technology including social media. Miller discussed the culture surrounding technology. Teachers in todays area need to be more engaging to stop students from checking their phones. Miller used a great example of how children don’t pick up there phone and start texting while playing a sport and teachers need to help create that same mentality at school (unless it is being used as a ressource). Technology is growing in our lives and his job is to inform people on how to better use our devices. He explains the importance of consent, privacy and security. He also encouraged us to use devices in the classroom safely. A couple fun facts we learned were that wifi servers can see everything you are doing on your device. I also learned that the advertisements that come up on social media have to do with what websites are being searched on your server. As a future teacher I learned how much my online identity matters. Due to the generation I grew up in most of my life is on the internet. Teachers must not share student information and images without consent. Teachers also need to make sure they are not posting images online that may lead a parent to believe they shouldn’t be teaching their child. An example pictures with drugs and alcohol. This may seem like common sense but sometimes common sense isn’t so common and it is important we are learning inappropriate vs appropriate content. As soon as he gave his presentation I went on my Instagram and made it private and luckily I had no photos I had to delete but I checked just in case. Teachers need to understand the consequences of posting inappropriate content as there have been many instances where teachers were fired due to social media. Miller had us look up #teacherlife #teacherproblems and #teacherfiered the results were inappropriate photos posted by teachers that lead to sever consequences. I now have a greater awareness in regards to what constitutes as personal information and public information. I also learned we need to be asking for consent more then we do when posting photos. I will be sure to post responsibly and use technology in a safe way.

First, I would like to acknowledge today was Orange shirt day. We got to attend an Indigenous ceremony and take a group photo in our orange shirts. The orange shirts show we acknowledge every child matters. In class we learned about audio editing, video editing, green screen editing and screen capturing. Learning about the different layers to editing was very interesting. Rich Mccue who manages the University of Victoria Libraries Digital Scholarship Commons was our guest speaker. He gave us an introductory lesson to video editing using iMovie. He was very helpful, I was able to figure out the assignment despite my lack of tech skills. It was easy to understand as he had step by step instructions. I started with the video editing. I used a video of goats and proceeded to manipulate it. I cut the video, adjusted the volume, added transitions and created a title page and credit page. We then learned how to use Audacity and Screencastify. Screencastify is really easy to set up using the plugin you are able to record your voice and what you are doing on the screen. This is a great tool to teach someone how to use a website or create a presentation. The workshop with Mccue was very beneficial and I feel as though I can use the new skills when teaching my own class.

Today we learned how to use twitter as an asset to help us follow teachers and find out what is going on in the different school districts. I got twitter for the first time to see what other educators are doing and keep up with bc teacher issues. The class was introduced to tweetdeck a platform that lets one see the hashtags you follow. I started following various education hashtags. Examples include #bclearns, #sd61learn, and #sd63learn
I am excited to learn the ins and outs and am grateful we were provided with some ideas of who to follow in class. I was taught that for safety and privacy reasons we shouldn’t add our birthdays ect.https://twitter.com I have been introduced to Trello with is an amazing website where teachers can view students progression. It allows teachers to view what students are working on in a private way. This allows privacy between student and teacher without other classmates viewing. We are using Trello to organize our ideas for our free inquiry and tech inquiry project it is very user-friendly. https://www.trello.com  We also talked Open Educational Resources that are shared online.

I am not very good with technology and was a little worried when told we needed to make website. However, it was easier then expected I set up my blog with the instructions on the web page: http://opened.ca I leaned how to choose a theme create categories to post under and create posts. We have been focusing on FIPPA (Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act). Today during class I learned how to find pictures online that I am able to use without copywriting. I usually use Creative Commons to find my photos https://creativecommons.org and I furthered my knowledge today. I also learned about some new websites such as Unsplash. I learned how to post photos to my website by saving them to my computer and then crediting the source before posting. I look forward to learning more about how to improve my blog and how to familiarize myself with technology that I can use when teaching.

Piano Midterm

Blog Post: three

The last thing I learned was a blues scale. The scale uses C, E flat, F, G flat, G, B flat, and C. I was not planning on learning a blues scale, but I heard someone in class playing it and decided to learn. I am happy I learned the scale because now I can play something in the blues genre along with the classical beginner pieces I learned. I believe I accomplished my goal of learning beginner piano songs as I learned three. I also learned a blues scale which I was not planning on learning. I did not end up learning bass clef as I decided to really focus on learning one clef rather than squishing in two and struggling. It is highly likely I will learn bass clef after this class when I continue learning piano. Now I am going to try and learn a small part of Fur Elise (using only the right hand). I realize this is a challenging music piece but I am going to try my very best to learn some of it. I wish to learn a part of Fur Elise because it was one of my favourite classical songs growing up. I am looking forward to playing part of it because it was written by Ludwig Van Beethoven an accomplished composer. I am excited to learn more piano basics and part of Fur Elise. I believe playing the piano will be an asset I can bring into my future classroom. Since I can read treble clef and play basic songs on the piano, I will be able to accompany my students while they sing or complete other music activities.
