Today we tried to connect with Verna Roberts but there were issues with her wifi. We spent the first half of the class in the video conference room. Half our class was in a separate room with video technology connecting them. Video conferencing is a great tool that can be used for student accessibility. Technology such as this helps enrolment and could be used more in schools. Face to Face video interactions are important as it allows fast and easy communication. Using video chats allow students and teachers to express themselves easier by using facial expressions and tones. Face to face can allow students to collaborate and actively focus. It is important for students to learn to socialize however this can be done in unconventional ways using technology.

Should a teachers teaching methods override a students need for technology use? The answer is obviously no. However, technology is one of the grey areas where some teachers may not be wiling to or may not understand how to video chat someone. Teachers may also see a students absence as the student not wanting to learn. This is not the case some students struggle with anxiety, long commutes, or sickness’. Technology can be used in these cases to provide students with the possibility to video chat into class. We were also asked the question: does modality biased exit? The answer is yes, there is a biased for face to face interaction. It is important for students to attend school and participate in their school community but sometimes this isn’t a possibility.

Schools should be flexible and if a student is accountable and wiling to learn they should be able to participate using technology. This flexibility will influence student engagement. Having solely face to face schooling is limiting learners. For the most part our society has binary thinking when it comes to face to face vs online as if it needs to be one or the other. There is another idea that it could be blended but blended does not meet mobility needs. Schools should be multi-access. This provides students with various learning methods to choose from. It may be individual if you are video chatting alone or it may be a more interactive experience if you are on campus with many others.

The Second half of the class was spent listening to presentations by peers. There were presentations on google apps, technology for students with disabilities, mindfulness apps and technology for assisted learning. The most exciting part of the class was seeing a bot in action. We learned about the different kinds of robots such as the Bean. The bot was designed to allow students to video chat into lessons.

Today we had students from Colquitz Middle School teach our Tech class about Minecraft. We learned danTDM is a famous Minecraft youtuber our students most likely follow. Minecraft is used to hangout with school friends on servers or used to connect with people globally. Minecraft gets students in touch with their creative side. Most of Minecraft worlds serve as a blank slate students can build on. If I brought Minecraft into the classroom I would not just tell students the tools they need to build something but allow them to figure it out on their own. This will allow students to remember how to build in the future. As a teacher you could use Minecraft as a tool to monitor students communication which is one of the curricular competencies. Today was my first time using Minecraft and I was not a huge fan. Personally I wanted a more structured idea of how to build. I am not very good with the system so I would need to practice more before implementing it in the classroom. I would not use Minecraft all the time maybe only provide a basic lesson of how to use it and then allow students to choose if They wish to use it for projects. Using Minecraft is a great way to get in touch with what your learners are doing.

Today we learned about ED Camp conferences. Before ED Camp conferences teachers would sit and listen to key note speakers during conferences. Teachers decided it would be more beneficial to talk to each other about topics they choose and thats how Ed Camp was created. It is a conference open to everyone teachers, students, and parents. The conference starts with blank boards teachers fill with topics they wish to discuss. The teachers parents and students can choose which talks they wish to go to. Today in class we did a sample ED Camp conference I went to a talk on classroom management and conflict solving. Together our group came up with ideas such as exist slip, students assigned jobs to clean the class, routines, student driven rule posters, and non participation slips.

Today our guest speaker was Jesse Miller from Mediated Reality. Millers talk was very engaging and interesting I learned a lot. He focused on the new generation of education and technology including social media. Miller discussed the culture surrounding technology. Teachers in todays area need to be more engaging to stop students from checking their phones. Miller used a great example of how children don’t pick up there phone and start texting while playing a sport and teachers need to help create that same mentality at school (unless it is being used as a ressource). Technology is growing in our lives and his job is to inform people on how to better use our devices. He explains the importance of consent, privacy and security. He also encouraged us to use devices in the classroom safely. A couple fun facts we learned were that wifi servers can see everything you are doing on your device. I also learned that the advertisements that come up on social media have to do with what websites are being searched on your server. As a future teacher I learned how much my online identity matters. Due to the generation I grew up in most of my life is on the internet. Teachers must not share student information and images without consent. Teachers also need to make sure they are not posting images online that may lead a parent to believe they shouldn’t be teaching their child. An example pictures with drugs and alcohol. This may seem like common sense but sometimes common sense isn’t so common and it is important we are learning inappropriate vs appropriate content. As soon as he gave his presentation I went on my Instagram and made it private and luckily I had no photos I had to delete but I checked just in case. Teachers need to understand the consequences of posting inappropriate content as there have been many instances where teachers were fired due to social media. Miller had us look up #teacherlife #teacherproblems and #teacherfiered the results were inappropriate photos posted by teachers that lead to sever consequences. I now have a greater awareness in regards to what constitutes as personal information and public information. I also learned we need to be asking for consent more then we do when posting photos. I will be sure to post responsibly and use technology in a safe way.

First, I would like to acknowledge today was Orange shirt day. We got to attend an Indigenous ceremony and take a group photo in our orange shirts. The orange shirts show we acknowledge every child matters. In class we learned about audio editing, video editing, green screen editing and screen capturing. Learning about the different layers to editing was very interesting. Rich Mccue who manages the University of Victoria Libraries Digital Scholarship Commons was our guest speaker. He gave us an introductory lesson to video editing using iMovie. He was very helpful, I was able to figure out the assignment despite my lack of tech skills. It was easy to understand as he had step by step instructions. I started with the video editing. I used a video of goats and proceeded to manipulate it. I cut the video, adjusted the volume, added transitions and created a title page and credit page. We then learned how to use Audacity and Screencastify. Screencastify is really easy to set up using the plugin you are able to record your voice and what you are doing on the screen. This is a great tool to teach someone how to use a website or create a presentation. The workshop with Mccue was very beneficial and I feel as though I can use the new skills when teaching my own class.

I am not very good with technology and was a little worried when told we needed to make website. However, it was easier then expected I set up my blog with the instructions on the web page: http://opened.ca I leaned how to choose a theme create categories to post under and create posts. We have been focusing on FIPPA (Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act). Today during class I learned how to find pictures online that I am able to use without copywriting. I usually use Creative Commons to find my photos https://creativecommons.org and I furthered my knowledge today. I also learned about some new websites such as Unsplash. I learned how to post photos to my website by saving them to my computer and then crediting the source before posting. I look forward to learning more about how to improve my blog and how to familiarize myself with technology that I can use when teaching.
